Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Christopher Moore, and Dracula will love this mordant take on vampire romance, which readers have called “funny and clever and emotionally hard-hitting” as well as "a perfectly creepy read."

High school senior Stella Ortiz loves field hockey, her friends, biology class, and the occasional trashy vampire romance. So when she encounters mysterious transfer student Sebastian Weber--a real-life version of her favorite novels' broodingly gorgeous protagonists--she's immediately drawn to him. Her friends, on the other hand, aren't impressed Sebastian misses tons of school, he day-drinks something that smells like pennies, and oh yeah, he's a vampire.

What starts as a quirky send-up of vampire romance quickly turns sinister. Stella and her friends find themselves pitted against not only Sebastian, but his entire family--a cadre of supernatural predators determined to keep the secret of their existence from spreading any further.

Sometimes, breakups really are a matter of life and death.

**I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review**

The First Bite is the Deepest drew me in with it's alluring title and synopsis. The synopsis makes it seem as though Stella is the main character, and while most of what is happening is happening to her, the book constantly flips between the perspectives of all her friends; Nadia, Austin, and Jenny. Which brings me to the issues I had with the book.

The flipping of perspectives and switching of scenes within a chapter are not very well spaced. It took me until halfway through the book and picking up the actual kindle copy (I initially received a PDF in exchange for my honest review) to realize that there was indeed notice that something was changing. Usually when perspective changes or a scene changes, there's a noticable space, or maybe asterisks are used, but the spaces were only slightly bigger between paragraphs during a scene change, compared to the spaces between regular paragraphs. This made it very frustrating to read when it seemed like things were just randomly changing with no warning.

I almost stopped reading at the halfway point because of this. I shut down the app and went to bed and decided to give it another try the next day. It was only then that I realized the slightly bigger space between scene and perspective changes.

It also states in the synopsis that this is a "mordant take on vampire romance". There wasn't really a lot of romance with the two main characters and it wasn't really done in a funny way. I have an odd sense of humor though, so I could have just missed what was supposed to be funny about it. We do see more romance with two of the side characters, which I enjoyed a lot more than the romance between Stella and Sebastion.

I did like the fact that it wasn't a typical teen/vamp romance, though I can't quite explain how it's not a typical teen/vamp romance without giving spoilers. Also, I loved the diversity of the characters. It wasn't all 'in your face, look at me I have diverse characters'. It was very natural.

Unfortunately, it ended very abruptly for me. It read as though there was going to be a little bit more and then just ended. I double checked between both copies to make sure it wasn't some error with the PDF, but it was the same for both.

Overall, a very nice premise and story, but maybe not the type of book for me.

The First Bite Is the Deepest eBook Elisa Catrina Reviews

I was very impressed by the writing style, humor, and character development of this author. This is a great story that keeps you guessing, but the character development is what really makes me recommend this book to others. The author does a great job making you care about the characters – both good and bad – and really building suspense to determine who exactly falls in the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ (or both) categories.

Like another reviewer said, the point of view and scenes do changes at times within chapters, but I don’t see how they could have found the changes hard to follow. Elisa Catrina moved seamlessly from one perspective to the next, with background details making it very easy to follow along. Most readers don’t need punctuation to explain to them what is happening.

In any case, I highly recommend this novel for anyone who enjoys a good story and great characters. Very excited and hopeful for a follow up to this book!
Exceptional book. My usual reading choice falls more on the John Grisham courtroom drama and mysteries, and this read matched my desire for well written stories that keep my interest in that it was fast paced with no wasted rhetoric…hard to put down. The characters are true to life—Estela, Nadia, Jenny, and Austin--a foursome of friends loyal to the core…motivated to ace their high school senior year hit a “bump on the road.” The title lets you know vampires are involved and it sparked my interest having watched the well-known TV series. I was honestly surprised as the story line developed, with twists and turns that I did not see coming. This is one of a handful of the hundreds of books in my kindle library that excels in vocabulary and descriptive scenes that placed me in the middle of the action. I expected a different ending and can see a sequel in the future. Although the characters cuss minimally for their age and situation they find themselves in, a couple of times it hit me between the eyes. Hence, the four stars, that otherwise would have merited five. Recommend this book and look forward to more from this author.
This excellent YA novel begins as a takedown of teenage vampire romance tropes, but it doesn't stop there. Elisa Catrina follows a group of high school seniors as they try to defend their friend Stella from a bloodsucking bad-news boyfriend. Along the way, there are vampire puns and badly-planned schemes, but these are not really what the book's about. The book is about how, if you're a teenager in an abusive relationship (and there are several of those in the book), the people you really need around you are your friends.

I want to talk about the friends here, because they're amazing. Jenny, Austin, and Nadia are all people I would have wanted as my friends in high school loyal, complex, and nerdy in hilarious ways. Jenny is always disappointed that the drama teacher won't let her use real fireworks onstage as part of her great vision for Pippin. Nadia is tired of defending her choice to cover her hair, but whatever, it's her body and her choice, and she's perfectly aware of all of the ramifications, thank you very much. Austin, the only white person and only guy in the group, is built like a football player, uses the Communist Manifesto as an audition monologue, and if you haven't done the reading to prepare for English class, he will judge you hard.

I didn't expect the book to get as dark as it gets in some scenes. Those awful high school relationships get genuinely awful. But, by the same token, those high school friendships really matter.
